Why does a car with LPG use gasoline?

Many drivers mistakenly believe that cars equipped with LPG systems do not consume gasoline except when the engine starts. However, there are situations that require it. In this article, we will explain why when refueling gas, we should not forget about refueling small amounts of gasoline, but also about mistakes that mislead drivers.

Decrease in the fuel level indicator in the tank

Imagine a situation in which we overcome longer routes and notice that at the beginning of the trip the tip indicating the state of petrol in the tank was in a different position than after the end of the journey. Many drivers mistakenly think that this is a mistake resulting from their fault and means the normal human factor to switch to a propane-butane mixture. However, the tip is not always reduced due to the consumption of petrol while driving and the usual error associated with the car electronics and its sensors.

For less experienced drivers it can be extremely confusing, but often the usual error related to fuel consumption is the error of electronics and sensors in the car, not the actual use of gasoline as fuel used to drive the car. Despite the fact that workshop employees should inform about this possibility or apply preventive solutions, they often forget about such a fact from pure experience.

Fuel level sensors do not work?

Although it may seem that it is the fault of the sensors installed in the car and it is enough to replace them so that the problem disappears, the problem seems more trivial. This is related to the consumption of fuel in our car. If car engineers did not take advantage of the possibility of installing a sensor on a float in the fuel tank, and they chose a solution with fuel flow through the fuel injectors, then the readings related to fuel consumption will be different.

Although the propane-butane mixture is injected through the injectors, not the fuel, the sensor responsible for the fuel condition goes crazy and recognizes that gasoline is fed into the engine, which is associated with its "fueling". The mere opening of fuel injections is counted as the time in which gasoline is fed, and thus, it decreases all the time. Most owners of cars from France are exposed to this problem, although not only cars from this country use such solutions. Workshops have the opportunity to implement solutions to eliminate this "problem", however, this is an additional cost for which workshop owners are not very willing to decide, because they do not want to raise the price for installing additional sensors during the installation of LPG installations.

How to compensate for incorrect fuel level readings?

Many good plants with experience in installing LPG installations decide to install special programs colloquially called emulators. They are responsible for deceiving the sensors and refueling the car, despite the fact that this operation is not performed. It is possible to make changes in the controller settings, responsible for indicating the fuel level. What's more, to check the real condition of fuel, the simplest way is to drive the medium distance and the car is off and re-ignite after a few minutes of waiting. In some models, the sensor readings are as accurate as possible if there is a certain difference in wear between the sensor mounted on the float and the other mounted on the jets.

Are fuel consumption readings always wrong?

Of course, there are cases that cars consume a small amount of gasoline, moving on LPG. This happens in cars that are heavily exploited, almost all their power is used in them. This is the case with cars with petrol jets which, depending on the mode of operation, uses petrol doses depending on the level of "car operation". High speeds combined with high revolutions affect the slightly increased consumption of petrol despite driving on LPG. This consumption is also noticeable at the tank level indication.

If you are worried that your car still takes gasoline despite the installation, in most cases, you have nothing to worry about. Most often, incorrect sensor readings are responsible for this.
